WASHINGTON D.C. – After a tenure focused on reducing government size and efficiency, tech titan Elon Musk has announced his departure from the Trump administration. The world’s richest man confirmed his exit via a post on his social media platform, X, where he also expressed gratitude to President Donald Trump for the opportunity.
Musk’s role as a “special government employee” for the Department of Government Efficiency, affectionately known as “Doge,” was temporary, allowing him to work up to 130 days annually on federal projects. His departure, while anticipated given the nature of his temporary designation, notably comes just a day after he publicly criticized a central legislative piece of Trump’s agenda.
“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President Donald Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk wrote on X. He added optimistically, “The Doge mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”
The BBC reports that the White House began “offboarding” Musk on Wednesday night, formally marking the end of his involvement in the administration’s drive to streamline government operations. Musk’s time as an advisor, characterized by his ambitious approach to efficiency and disruption, now concludes as the focus shifts to how the “Doge mission” might indeed evolve into a permanent fixture within government operations, as he envisions.
