Breaking: Deadly Explosion Near Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine in Kampala Leaves Two Dead on Uganda’s Martyrs Day

KAMPALA, Uganda – Tragedy struck Uganda’s capital this morning as a suspected bomb explosion rocked the vicinity of the Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine, killing at least two people. The incident occurred as thousands of pilgrims gathered across the country to mark Martyrs Day, one of Uganda’s most significant annual religious events.

The explosion, confirmed by both the military and NTV Uganda, happened just hours before the main Martyrs Day commemorations, which honor 45 young Christian converts executed between 1885 and 1887 by the then-King of Buganda. The Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine, located on the shores of Lake Victoria, is one of the key pilgrimage sites during this national holiday.

Eyewitnesses reported a loud blast near the church premises, followed by scenes of panic as security forces and emergency responders rushed to the scene.

The UPDF has cordoned off the area and launched an investigation into the cause of the explosion. Security has been heightened across Kampala, with additional checks at major religious sites and public gatherings.

Martyrs Day draws tens of thousands of faithful from Uganda and neighboring countries, making it a high-profile event on the national calendar.

This is a developing story. More updates to follow as details emerge.
