Presidential Special Projects Head, Dennis Itumbi to Meet Content Creators Over Betting Ad Disputes

Nairobi, Kenya – Dennis Itumbi, Head of Creative Economy and Special Projects in the Office of the President, is set to meet with digital content creators on Monday, 9th June 2025 to address ongoing disputes surrounding the advertising of betting and gambling products in Kenya.

The meeting comes in the wake of sweeping regulatory changes by the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB), which recently banned the use of celebrities, influencers, and content creators in all gambling advertisements. The new guidelines, introduced after a 30-day suspension of all gambling ads, require that all betting promotions comply with strict approval and classification procedures, and prohibit any glamorization of gambling or suggestions that betting is a quick path to wealth.

The Digital Content Creators Association of Kenya (DCCAK) has strongly criticized the BCLB’s approach, arguing that the ban was imposed without sufficient stakeholder consultation and undermines the role of responsible digital communicators. DCCAK chairman Bob Ndolo emphasized that content creators have consistently adhered to advertising standards and should be involved in shaping future regulations.

The new rules also mandate that all gambling advertisements must be submitted to the BCLB for approval and then classified by the Kenya Film Classification Board before being broadcast or published. Additionally, ads must display responsible gambling messages, license details, and cannot be placed near schools or religious institutions.

Kenya’s crackdown on betting ads is part of a broader government effort to promote responsible gambling and protect vulnerable populations, particularly minors and youth, from the risks associated with aggressive marketing and gambling addiction.

Itumbi’s meeting with content creators aims to foster dialogue and find common ground between regulators and industry stakeholders, as the creative sector seeks clarity and fair treatment under the new advertising landscape.

The outcome of these discussions could shape the future of digital advertising and influencer partnerships in Kenya’s fast-evolving betting industry.
